Inspired by . . . afternoons spent on a beach in Mauritius.

“Mauritius is an island nation off the coast of Africa, East of Madagascar.  The island has a feel of timelessness reflected in the beauty of the natural surroundings.  Mark Twain said 'You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.'  Twenty-eight miles wide by forty miles long, Mauritians label their island a melting pot of where past and present smoothly blend together.  The island has this rustic, historic feel with colonial architecture and garb, and perpetually friendly faces of locals, blended with the new shiny resorts and eager tourism. 

Everyday an enormous classic looking pirate’s ship would pass by our beach with sails billowing and people would take pictures. This skull is the kind of piece I pictured being found in a treasure chest off the shores there if one of those ships sank hundreds of years ago.  The ship captain, Bensley, would come by each day, with a loyal dog that followed him up and down the beach, and ask people if they wanted to tour the island by this boat. The dog was a gorgeous Mauritian mutt. I didn’t know his name, so I named this piece after his owner.  An old world Jolly Roger meets new world glamour by getting encrusted with diamonds.”

This charm features pavé pink sapphire eyes and a single pear shape pink sapphire solitaire for the nose.
